AVEDON FASHION 1944 - 2000

I feel compelled to begin this post with a story. This summer during the transition of the months June and July, I was living in Brooklyn and taking pictures everyday surrounded by many other photography lovers like me in my neighborhood and Manhattan - life was...perfection. One day some of my friends and I made our way over to the International Center of Photography (ICP) in midtown. I didn't know what to expect as we entered the huge glass doors, but as soon as I entered I was transfixed by everything in my sights. While some my friends lingered in the gift store, I made my way downstairs to the Richard Avedon expedition. Prior to this, I knew little about Avedon; so walking in, I saw his work with a fresh mind. His style has had a major impact on me and my photography since that fantastic visit to the ICP. His love for genuine beauty shown in unique, yet classic and glamorous ways always end up in the back of my mind when I take portraits.
Looking through this newly published book of his accumulated best photographs, I was struck once again with the feeling of awe and admiration that overcame me that day at the ICP, but also a new realization of details previously gone without notice.
Here are some selected photos that show various themes, and others that I just purely love...

Marella Agnelli, New York, December 1959
Dovima, Paris, August 1950
Vicomtesse Jacqueline de Ribes, New York, December 1955
Sunny Harnet, Paris, August 1954
Audrey Hepburn, New Yorks, January 1968
Marella Agnelli, New York, December 1953
Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya, New York, May 1, 1966
From many of his photos - like the ones above - we can see that Avedon
must loved the length and beauty of a woman's neck.

Some of my favorites:
Penelope Tree, New York, July 1967
Veronica Compton with Bruno, New York, July 1949
Elise Daniels and Monique, Paris, August 1948Veruschka, New York, January, 1967
Many of his photos depicted action like this one.

The Debate

I managed to snap this picture during a heated moment from a recent Harkness discussion which involved the many facets of Holden Caulfield's complex character.

Coffee Break

Somewhere in the 60's on Park Avenue, a cop game me and my camera a smile.
